Serralunga Day 2026: Barolo 2023 Preview and Winemaker Role

Serralunga Day 2026 was a day that revealed much about the producer community and even more about the practices that turn grapes into wine. The event took place at the Villaggio Narrante of Fontanafredda. The preview of the Barolo del Comune di Serralunga d’Alba 2023 was central, and the report coexists with a question about the producer’s role. The facts of the event sit alongside a critique of current tasting interpretations. Serralunga Day framed the discussion around identity, technique, and choice.

Serralunga Day established as a collective hub

The fifth edition of Serralunga Day concluded on Monday 14 September at the Villaggio Narrante of Fontanafredda. The event centered on the Barolo del Comune di Serralunga d’Alba 2023. It offered masterclasses, a public tasting and a charity dinner that paired Barolo and Brunello. The event showed a growing community and closer institutional ties. Serralunga Day confirmed the cultural link between the Langhe and Montalcino.

Institutional presence was concrete. The Consorzio di Tutela Barolo Barbaresco Alba Langhe e Dogliani engaged with the Consorzio del Brunello di Montalcino in joint initiatives. The presidents of the two bodies emphasized identity and attention to quality. The Portfolio Tasting was opened to the public for the first time. The event involved 400 between restaurateurs and wine lovers, that is, hundreds of professional operators put in direct contact with the producers.

Tastings and numbers: what the vintage really said

The blind tasting in the morning showcased the Barolo del Comune di Serralunga d’Alba 2023. Gabriele Gorelli conducted the tasting together with Andrea Lonardi and Michaela Morris. Recurring descriptors were freshness, balance, salinity and crisp tannins. These elements outlined a dynamic vintage capable of good drinkability and prospects for longevity. The 2023 was portrayed as a vintage of freshness and balance.

The masterclass “The potential of time” compared 14 Barolo and 14 Brunello with vintages back to the 1990s. The charity dinner brought together 25 producers from Serralunga and 17 from Brunello. The dinner featured magnums from 2022 paired with dishes designed for the occasion. The proceeds from the dinner will be donated to the Accademia della Vigna, a project dedicated to training in the vineyards, thus linking tasting, fundraising and professional investment in agricultural work.

Tastings focus profiles and vintages, but they do not tell all the choices behind each bottle.

Beyond terroir: the winemaker’s decisive role

Alongside data on wine and territory a clear critique of territorial determinism emerged. In mixed flights the element that often moves a result from adequate to memorable is the winemaker’s hand. The Master of Wine attendees led the tastings with rigor, showing encyclopedic knowledge of the terroirs. Practical observation showed that two wines of the same color can diverge radically in aromatic and taste profiles. The explanation is no longer only the place of origin. The human difference in the cellar determines much of the final profile.

This does not mean denying the role of soil, exposure or climate: those factors form the starting matrix. But it means that hundreds of decisions in the vineyard and cellar produce a set of choices. Decisions concern when to harvest, how to handle the skins, which barrels to use and when to intervene or stop. The consequence for importers and label selectors is clear: they must know producers and practice beyond the denomination.

Knowing the person and the production practice becomes essential commercial information.

What changes for importers, restaurateurs and sommeliers

For those who buy and serve wine the most practical lesson of Serralunga Day is twofold. On one hand there are the verifiable facts of the event: the 2023 preview presented in guided tastings, the historical masterclass between Barolo and Brunello and the public involvement of 400 operators. On the other hand there is the need to read every label also as a document of company choices. Operators must evaluate producer and method beyond the denomination.

This changes how a wine list or an import proposal is built. It is not enough to select by zone or vintage. It is necessary to investigate vineyard and cellar practices, training projects like the Accademia della Vigna and the producer’s technical reputation. What remains open is the extent to which the market will transfer this knowledge to the final consumer without losing commercial clarity.
